Memory stocks rally before the bell after SK Hynix's record quarter; Micron up about 4%, Western Digital about 4.5%
SK Hynix's record third-quarter profit lifted U.S. memory and chip stocks in premarket trading and pushed Nasdaq 100 futures up about 0.4%.
U.S. memory-chip stocks rose in premarket trading Wednesday after SK Hynix, a main supplier of high-bandwidth memory for Nvidia’s AI processors, reported a record quarter.
| Stock | Premarket move (about 5:40 AM ET) |
|---|---|
| SK Hynix ADR (SKHY) | +7.8% |
| Western Digital (WDC) | +4.5% |
| Micron (MU) | +4% |
| Marvell (MRVL) | +1.7% |
| AMD (AMD) | +1.5% |
| Nvidia (NVDA) | +0.8% |
| Nasdaq 100 e-mini | +0.41% (4:53 AM ET) |
The numbers: SK Hynix’s third-quarter revenue topped 100 trillion won for the first time, up 328% from a year earlier, and operating profit rose 632% to 83.33 trillion won, an 80% operating margin (company slides). Reuters described the profit jump as more than sevenfold.
Why it matters: memory has become one of the tightest parts of the AI hardware chain, and SK Hynix’s margins are a direct read on pricing power that Micron, Western Digital and Sandisk share. The rally comes on Fed decision day and hours before Microsoft and Alphabet, whose capital-spending plans drive that demand.
WMR data: as of Tuesday’s close Micron had risen 2.8% on the day, and the 3x leveraged chip ETF SOXL jumped 11.7% but was still down 29% over a month, so the group is rebounding from a deep pullback. More on /en/markets/semis/.
