Intel and Amazon Slide After Hours on Earnings; Intel Down More Than 20% at One Point

Intel fell more than 20% at one point in after-hours trading after a fourth-quarter revenue outlook below expectations, and Amazon dropped nearly 6% after third-quarter results missed estimates. AMD, Micron and SanDisk also slipped.

Intel and Amazon both fell sharply in extended trading after reporting results after the bell on Oct. 29. Losses widened through the evening: Intel was down about 16% early on and more than 20% at one point later in the session.

After-hours moves as reported at about 6:20 PM ET (Mediapen); they can change before Friday’s open.

What happened: Intel said soaring memory prices are weighing on PC demand and supply chains, and guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15 billion–$16 billion. Amazon’s third-quarter revenue and earnings per share missed estimates even as AWS revenue grew 39%, while full-year capital spending of about $220 billion kept the focus on AI costs.

Why it matters: Coming a day after Alphabet’s 13% drop, the results add to investor worry about when AI spending pays off, which is why chip stocks slid with them.

What to watch: Friday’s premarket for Intel, Amazon and the chip group, and whether the selloff spreads to the Nasdaq 100 at the open.
