SK Hynix's Record Quarter Lifts Memory Chips on Fed Decision Day as Robinhood Slides 8%
Data as of: 2026-10-28 06:45 ET (premarket; prior-session closes as of Oct 27)
Key takeaways
- The Fed decides at 2:00 PM ET, with a hold priced at roughly 91-93% after September's hike.
- SK Hynix's record quarter lifted memory stocks before the bell, with Micron up about 4%.
- Last night's reporters were sold even on beats: Robinhood fell about 8% on a profit miss.

Wall Street wakes up to Fed decision day with chip stocks doing the talking. Overnight, SK Hynix, a main supplier of AI memory for Nvidia, reported its first quarter above 100 trillion won in revenue with an 80% operating margin, and Micron and Western Digital climbed about 4% before the bell.
Not every report is being rewarded. Robinhood, Seagate and Visa are all lower after their numbers, and Enphase sank about 10% after hours on a weak outlook.
At 2:00 PM ET the Fed is expected to hold after September’s hike, so the real test is whether Chair Kevin Warsh leaves the door open to a December increase. After the close, Microsoft and Alphabet have to show that AI spending is paying off.
What matters today
The Fed’s first meeting after a hike
The FOMC ends its two-day meeting this afternoon with the target range at 3.75%-4.00% after September’s unanimous quarter-point increase, the first hike since 2023 (Fed statement). Futures put the odds of no change today at 90.6% to 92.8% (Kiplinger, Barchart), so the market reaction should come from Chair Kevin Warsh’s 2:30 PM press conference and any dissents.
Why it matters: September CPI ran 3.7% year over year with core at 2.6% (Kiplinger), oil is near $100, and futures already lean toward a December hike. A firm signal would test the 10-year yield, which sits just under 5% at 4.99%. Evercore ISI’s Krishna Guha flags meaningful execution risk around today’s messaging.
SK Hynix gives AI memory a new data point
SK Hynix’s third-quarter revenue rose 328% from a year earlier and operating profit rose 632% to 83.33 trillion won (company slides via Investing.com). Reuters said the results lifted Nasdaq futures, with Micron up about 4% and Western Digital about 4.5% before the bell; SK Hynix’s ADR was up 7.8%.
Why it matters: SK Hynix’s numbers are read as a gauge of AI hardware demand. WMR data: Micron rose 2.8% on Tuesday and leveraged chip ETF SOXL jumped 11.7% that day but is still down 29% over a month; see Semiconductor Cycle. Next: Samsung Electronics and Sandisk report Thursday.
Beats aren’t enough this morning
Last night’s reporters are being sold even where they beat. Robinhood missed on profit as crypto revenue fell 55% to $120 million while bitcoin slid about 28% over three months (Reuters). Seagate guided above the estimates Investing.com compiled for both revenue and EPS, yet fell, a sign of how much good news storage stocks had already priced in. Enphase’s revenue was down about 29% from a year earlier and its fourth-quarter range implies another step down.
| Company | Result vs. estimate | Move |
|---|---|---|
| Robinhood (HOOD) | GAAP EPS $0.51 vs. $0.55 (LSEG, via Reuters) | about -8% premarket |
| Seagate (STX) | Non-GAAP EPS $7.68 vs. $7.39; Q2 guide above estimates | about -3% to -3.7% premarket |
| Visa (V) | Non-GAAP EPS $3.48 vs. $3.44; dividend +16% | about -1.4% to -1.7% premarket |
| Enphase (ENPH) | Non-GAAP EPS $0.41 vs. $0.51; Q4 revenue guide $225-255M vs. $300.5M | about -10% after hours |
WMR data: Robinhood ended Tuesday 38% below its 52-week high even before this drop. Full table in Market data below; tracker at Earnings Calendar.
Microsoft and Alphabet tonight
Investing.com puts consensus at $4.72 a share on $90.61 billion of revenue for Microsoft and $3.02 on $127.69 billion for Alphabet. Investors are watching Azure growth, Copilot sales and capital spending at Microsoft, and Google Cloud, search and returns on AI spending at Alphabet. Microsoft also reports days after offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of its staff (company blog; CNBC).
Why it matters: after Meta’s record equity raise, the market wants proof that AI spending is earning a return. WMR data: the two arrive from opposite places. Microsoft sits only 2.2% below its 52-week high, so the bar is set by expectations; Alphabet is 20.3% below its high and down 5.8% in a week, so a solid Cloud number has more room to move the stock.
Before the Bell
| U.S. futures (about 4:50-6:00 AM ET) | Change |
|---|---|
| Nasdaq 100 e-mini | +0.3–0.41% |
| S&P 500 e-mini | +0.08–0.1% |
| Dow e-mini | -0.17–-0.3% |
| Premarket mover | Move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Robinhood (HOOD) | -8% to -8.4% | Q3 EPS missed as crypto revenue fell 55% |
| SK Hynix ADR (SKHY) | +7.8% | Record quarterly profit, up more than sevenfold |
| Western Digital (WDC) | +4.5% | Memory-chip rally after SK Hynix’s results |
| Micron (MU) | +4% | Memory-chip rally after SK Hynix’s results |
| Seagate (STX) | -3% to -3.7% | Fell despite a beat and above-consensus guidance |
| Visa (V) | -1.4% to -1.7% | Fiscal Q4 EPS beat, but shares slipped |
The futures split mirrors the morning: chip-heavy Nasdaq contracts are higher on the memory rally, while the Dow is held back by earnings disappointments and the wait for the Fed. Oil gave back Tuesday’s drop, with WTI back above $101, after the Houthis claimed a strike on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery (Reuters, Yahoo Finance). Today’s regular-session reaction in the evening report.

What to watch
| Time (ET) | Event |
|---|---|
| 8:30 AM | Advance goods trade balance (Sep), consensus -$129.0B to -$130.5B |
| Morning | Bank of Canada decision; 19 of 34 economists in a Reuters poll expect a hike to 2.50% |

- If the Fed holds but signals a December hike is still live → check: the 2-year and 10-year yields (10-year at 4.99%), the dollar, and whether the chip rally holds into the close
- If the statement or Warsh sounds done with hikes → check: the dollar and rate-sensitive small caps (Russell 2000)
- If Microsoft and Alphabet keep or raise AI capital-spending plans → check: Micron, Western Digital and Nvidia after hours, and Samsung Electronics’ results Thursday
Not a forecast — what to check depending on the outcome.
Rest of the week: Thursday brings Q3 GDP (consensus 3.0%) and September PCE inflation (3.6% headline, 3.1% core, per CIBC), the ECB decision and Amazon’s results. Friday: Bank of Japan decision, the employment cost index (0.8% expected) and Chicago PMI. Tuesday Nov. 3 is Election Day; the next Fed meeting is Dec. 8-9.

Charts are computed directly from raw prices; each shows its own data date. In this morning edition the charts use Tuesday’s (Oct 27) regular-session close, so they do not include after-hours or premarket moves. On the web, tap a chart for the detailed table.
Results figures come from the companies’ releases and SEC filings; after-hours moves from Investing.com (4:38 PM ET) and premarket moves from Reuters (about 4:50-5:40 AM ET) and Stocktwits (5:48 AM ET); early premarket readings can change by the open.
